Non College Credit: Students wishing to enroll into the EMT Intermediate Program and who do not wish to receive college credits will enroll directly with the Center for EMS Training.

Tuition Policy:

• Application Fee is due at time of registration.
• Tuition is expected to be paid in full by the first scheduled class.
• Payment may be by cash, check and money order or Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card. Students enrolling where fees are paid by the employer / agency must submit written authorization or valid purchase order with the application.
• Student application fees are non refundable ($250.00). Full tuition will be refunded if withdrawn 5 days prior to the beginning of the course. There will be no refunds for withdrawals once the program has started.

Application Process:

The completed student application form, tuition and all supporting documentation should be submitted as soon as possible to reserve class position. The following supporting documentation must be submitted with the completed student application:

1. Proof of age as evidenced by a copy of the student’s driver's license or certified birth certificate.
2. Copy of current AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider 2005 guidelines or ARC Professional rescuer certification card 2005 guidelines.
3. Copy of current EMT Basic certification.
4. Proof of a high school diploma, general equivalency diploma, or higher degree of education.

Course Description: SIM Man, SIM Baby and SIM IV are part of this class

The Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate 99 is a 3 year certification program designed to certify technicians to a mid-level of pre-hospital advanced life support care in Virginia. This program fulfills all the requirements of the National Standard Curriculum for the EMT-Intermediate 99.

All skills and subjects contained in the curriculum for Intermediate 99 are covered for a minimum of 272 hours of instruction with a minimum of 68 hours devoted to extensive clinical rotations in specialty units. In addition to the above, the candidate must complete a minimum of 10 patient contact calls in which they act as the team leader on an ALS ambulance.

Clinical rotations of this type are not usually available for lower level providers. These additional clinical rotations include time spent in OR/Recovery Units, Critical Care Units, Labor & Delivery Units, Pediatrics, Emergency Department, Family Practice, Mental Health Clinics, Dialysis Clinics, Neurovascular Rehabilitation Clinics, Detoxification Units, and Extended Care Facilities.

The Intermediate 99 Program is designed to educate the technician in the following areas of pre-hospital care: preparatory skills, airway management and ventilation, patient assessment, trauma, medical, special considerations and assessment based management.

Students successfully completing this program of instruction will be eligible for certification testing by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

In Virginia, all initial Intermediate 99 Programs are required to satisfy the testing guidelines established by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Upon successful course completion and National Registry EMT – Intermediate 99 certification, the technician must apply for Virginia certification before being allowed to practice at this level. After receiving Virginia credentials, the Intermediate 99 has the option to maintain National Registry Intermediate certification without affecting their Virginia certification. However, Virginia certification must be maintained in order to provide patient care at this level in this state.

Prerequisites:

1. The minimum age for course enrollment is 18 years of age at the start of the training program. As evidenced by a copy of the prospective students’ certified birth certificate or valid drivers license.
2. Be proficient in reading, writing and speaking the English language.
3. High school diploma, general equivalency diploma, or higher degree of education as evidenced by a copy of the certificate or official transcripts.
4. Be of sound physical and mental condition, capable of performing all assigned duties.
5. Have no physical defect, which would render the student unable to perform all practical skills required for this level of training.
6. A health examination and copies of immunization records will be required.
7. Hold current certification as an EMT Basic certification.
8. Hold current certification in an approved course in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Healthcare Provider CPR or Professional Rescuer)
9. Have successfully completed the Health Occupations Basic Entrance Exam. (HOBET)
10. Have never been convicted of a felony under the laws of this State or of the United States.
11. Have never been found guilty on Child, Domestic or Elderly Abuse.
12. Have never had an EMS License or Certificate revoked or suspended by any certifying agency.

Unit 1 Preparatory

Foundations of the EMT-I, Well-Being of the EMT-I, Medical-Legal and Ethical issues, an Overview of Human Systems, Emergency Pharmacology, Venous Access and Medication Administration.

Unit 2 Airway

ALS Airway Management, Oxygen Therapy, Airway Adjuncts, and Suctioning.

Unit 3 Patient Assessment

Patient Assessment, History Taking, Techniques of the Physical Exam, Clinical Decision Making, Communications and Documentation.

Unit 4 Medical

Respiratory, Cardiac, Altered Mental Status, Neurological, Abdominal, Environmental, Poisoning and Overdose, Behavioral, Allergic Reactions, GYN related emergencies, AHA ACLS 2005 Guidelines Certification.

Unit 5 Trauma Emergencies

Trauma Systems, Hemorrhage, Shock, Soft Tissue Injuries, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Burns and Chest Trauma, and Trauma Skills.

Unit 6 Special Considerations

Obstetrics, Neonatal Resuscitation, Pediatrics and Geriatrics. Make a Payment
